Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty Expansion Review
I was initially of two minds when wanting to check this DLC out: I felt the hype was a bit disproportionate but also felt like more Cyberpunk couldn't hurt... and boy was I wrong about it.
This expansion rivals the best CDPR has ever done in scope, detail, budget and inspiration. It's a thrilling ride full of twists and turns that have you grasping at straws trying to find the objectively correct way of dealing with the situations that arise.
Narrative
The premise of the expansion is to thrust you into a new part of Night City; namely Dogtown ( in close proximity to Pacifica). This is a self sustaining zone lead by a dictator ( he's also very evil... surprise! ) in search of a cure for your affliction.
You are introduced to a slew of new characters, all of which are morally ambiguous and have their own ulterior motives. One of these characters is Solomon Reed, played by none other than Idris Elba ( and he does an outstanding job at it), who slowly introduces you to the world of Dogtown.
The town itself is decidedly hostile and derelict: a true dystopia and somehow even worse than the main game's Night City.
I overall felt extremely impressed by the narrative this expansion put forth, both in the delivery and complexity of the main storyline, but also in the abundance and care put into the many side activities; it felt like a very loved project, that had the time, budget and care to be fleshed out properly.
Gameplay
The gameplay is more of the same, which can be both a good thing or a meh thing depending on your preferences. A new skilltree is introduced but I personally think it is a bit uninteresting, consisting mostly of upgrades to cybermods you may or may not already have.
The mission variety is pretty stellar as well: there's standard combat arenas (with and without boss fights), stealth missions, narrative set pieces and even a horror themed level... I'll start with the least impressive and finish on a high.
The worst bit of this expansion is by far the Alien Isolation inspired last level. The game thrusts you against an instant kill-on-detection enemy who sometimes pops from the ceiling to say hello, most times totally unpredictably and randomly. I routinely found myself insta-dead just because the game decided now is the time for the boy to drop from the ceiling and it just so happend the magic hatch was right in front of me. Overall this section, while interesting in concept, fails on many levels and is overall quite a drag. It is also unfortunate that this is the climax to the story, ur last impression of the game.
The stealth missions are overall a breath of fresh air from the main gameplay loop of mercilessly shotgunning enemies in their eye sockets. They are not extremely well realized but provide enough of a different flavor to be interesting and are short enough to not be frustrating.
The best bit about this expansion are the narrative set pieces. What I mean to make reference to when i say that is the long levels where your sole occupation is to speak to people and explore a deeply detailed and engaging location. You get to see some awe-inducing fortresses and casinos, and sometimes just engage with characters where your objective isn't to clear the room of any resistance.
The world
It really feels like all of Dogtown was hand crafted ( hence why its actual size is a bit smaller). This makes every inch of it extremely detailed and engaging and I had an absolute blast just exploring and taking many screenshots, mouth agape.
Conclusion
My overall impression of Phantom Liberty is an excellent one ( with special mention to the end credits, which were honestly the best end credits I have ever seen... they recreated a Bond movie just for fun) and it makes me sad that CDPR decided this will be the single expansion for this game. I feel this world has more to say and I would really love spending even more time in it. Overall, I would classify this as an exceptional experience ( significantly above the main game) and would advise absolutely everyone who has the main game to play it. Well worth the 30 euros.
